A Fundraiser for Hollis Field

One last save
before the lights go out.

For sixty-three summers a small diamond at the edge of town has belonged to whoever showed up with a glove. The lease ends in November. We're asking neighbors to help us keep it.

No. 01Top of the First · Warm-Ups
The first throw of the evening — leather, chalk, and the smell of cut grass.
No. 02Middle Innings · The Game
A pitch, a swing, a slide. Nothing here has ever been televised, and that's the point.
No. 03Bottom of the Ninth · Last Light
When the sodium lamps come on, the field turns the color of an old penny. We'd like to keep that.

The numbers are unromantic. New fencing along the third-base line. A scoreboard that no longer blinks the count at random. Six replacement bulbs for the west bank of lights — the ones that throw the long shadows in centerfield. Insurance through the next season. The lease, renewed.

None of it is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a working ball field and a lot with weeds growing through the basepaths.
